new tour date + ep Jul. 14, 2003

MAGNET will be playing live as part of EDINBURGH FESTIVAL’s ‘T on the Fringe’ supporting DOVES on 22nd August @ Edinburgh Corn Exchange.

The new ‘Chasing Dreams’ EP tracklisting is now confirmed, set for release mid-September, the 10” vinyl will include:
1. Chasing Dreams
2. Little Miss More or Less
3. I’ll Come Along’ (re-mixed by Mo’Wax cut n’paste groove merchants The Psychonauts)

The ltd edition CD will also include a heramin-loaded version of ‘Home Song’.

‘Chasing Dreams’ from the EP was mixed by Steve Osborne at George Martin’s Air Studio’s in London. Steve’s sprinkled magic on tracks by U2, PJ Harvey, Doves, The Streets among others so Magnet’s in good company…

The remix of ‘I’ll Come Along’ by The Psychonauts has already carried Magnet into ”’avvin it” pastures new. The track made it’s party-boots debut at Glastonbury Festival’s Rizla Tent.

The ‘as yet untitled’ proper debut album is coming along well, the full Magnet live ensemble will be spending time this Summer at Sawmills Studio, just off the coast of St Austell, Cornwall adding finishing touches to the record. ‘My Darling Curse’ that will feature on the album has just been mixed by Ben Hillier (Blur, Elbow) and is the first new track all ready for action.

There will be more tour dates around the release of the EP.

ENJOY THE SUMMER!!!

‘The Day We Left Town’ Reviews:
…a fantastical cross between david lynch’s ‘Lost Highway’ and shaded 60’s black and white movies played out on lap steel
Rough Trade Shop

Like looking into the living room of other peoples houses at Christmas time, when you still have absolutely fucking ages to go ‘til you get home, new Magnet EP ‘The Day We Left Town’ is stunningly desolate. All soaring gusts of icy wind, but with the smell of hot chocolate curling its way through the cold, Magnet have perfected the art of bringing 1950’s glamour to modern day despair. Magnificently gentle, the single is a lullaby for the jilted generation
GIGWISE

Whisperin & Hollerin’
Even Johansen is unquestionably an excellent artist and “The Day We Left Town” is his third superb EP, albeit one with an air of almost unbearable, numbed-out introspection. **********

TDWLT reviews Apr. 3, 2003

MAGNET – “The Day We Left Town” / new reviews all out today.

NME
See that bit at the end of Die Hard where the ambulances turn up and Dean Martin’s “Let It Snow” starts playing? Making you feel all warm and cuddly and willing to forget the slaughter of smug German crims that preceded it? Now imagine the same scene set in the Wild West. This is the song you’d hear. It’s a bit Christmassy, a bit sad, a bit Ennio Morricone, a bit Radiohead, a bit Avalanches. It’s lovely and, if you’ve just shoved Alan Rickman off a skyscraper, just what the doctor ordered’ (Simon Lewis)

Q
Norway, inexplicably, continues to produce oddball talent by the bucketload. For anyone who’s ever wondered what a Radiohead soundtrack for It’s A Wonderful Life might sound like, Magnet’s Even Johansen has the answer on The Day We Left Town EP (****)

The Fly
Further proof, if needed that North Europeans are the Kings of electro-epic, the title track is a triumphant unison of Bjork’s vital organs and Jason Spaceman’s soul

TDWLT review Mar. 20, 2003

The Day We Left Town ’ EP – Radar
For 27 and a half years, I have been searching for the record that I want playing when I die/fall in love/have underwater sex with Julie Delpy. The title track of this ep may well bring my quest to its end. Evan Johansen (for it is he) writes gentle, electronic tinged acoustic ballads, sung in the voice of Thom Yorke after 3 bottles of gin and tears, that overwhelm the soul with wave after wave of bittersweet joy these are the melodies that you hear in your head once the wounds have healed, and you can go back to remembering the good times you had with the girl that broke your heart. “The Day We Left Town” opens like the score to a Frank Capra film, and ends as Johansen and his lover look back at their former home as the kerosene flames engulf it. Breathtaking doesn’t even begin to cover it. I’m taking this ep to my desert island. Really.

TDWLT reviews Mar. 6, 2003

Two Great ‘The Day We Left Town’ reviews already!!!

The Day We Left Town ’ EP – www.logo-magazine.com
Everybody should worship at the alter of Magnet, ‘The Day We Left Town’ sounds like an audio remake of Frank Capra’s ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, peopled by hand puppets and giant rabbits nicked from The Flaming Lips tour bus. ****

The Day We Left Town ’ EP – www.rock-city.co.uk
It’s a long time since music has done what this E.P has done to me, and the fact that my preference is Heavy Metal or Punk Rock only serves as testament to this most ambient and overwhelmingly enchanting 4 track masterpiece. Different to anything else I have heard in a long time I find it tough to pigeon hole, other than to say at times the beauty of ‘Radio Head’ comes to mind, but other than that this C.D is unique and already a proud treasure in my collection. Sounding like it could accompany a weepy black and white movie on a Sunday afternoon, and its by no mistake in track one that they have gone for a very old sound with a background of the softest angles humming from above. It’s delightfully happy music in a very laid back way and you could well nurse a broken heart to it’s enigmatic charm. ‘Even Johansen’ is the spine chilling genius in question and his debut album is being released in the summer, seemingly produced by god’s angels themselves. Touring as special guests to ‘Ed Harcourt’ to help promote this tangible Norwegian maverick we can only hope and prey that Radio1 feel its good enough for pop consumption. Quite simply 4 tracks of uncompromised musical genius…… Lullabies don’t and can’t get better than this. 5/5

Chasing Dreams review Nov. 11, 2002

Great Chasing Dreams ’ EP in Whisperin’& Hollerin’:
MAGNET – aka EVEN JOHANSEN – was doused in accolades for his recent debut EP, winning a coveted Record of the Week award from the notorious Mark & Lard in the process.

That EP is now apparently rarer than hen’s teeth, but if you missed it then cheer up, because “Chasing Dreams” is an excellent second floor to stop and grab the elevator as it ascends.

Apart from a bit of mixing expertise from the influential Steve Osborne in London and a skewhiff, but enjoyable remix (by PSYCHONAUTS) of the track “I’ll Come Along”, “Chasing Dreams” was entirely pieced together in Even’s Bergen, Norway studio and it retains a beguiling charm all its’ own.

The title song leads off and it’s a beaut: all lazy, rolling drums, starkly picked strings, lingering, janglesome guitars and Johansen’s coolly lugubrious vocal, making like the very essence of windswept. He’ll probably garner the (by now) obligatory Buckley/ Martin comparisons, but second track “Little Miss More Or Less” finds him sounding wonderfully torpid, like he’s rubbing the sleep out of his eyes as he sings.

Both these tracks are elegant, emotive affairs, but this writer’s personal favourite is surely “Home Song”, where Even appears to lassoo Ennio Morricone, Calexico and The Handsome Family and drives ‘em all into Death Valley to do battle. Beautiful and strange, if there’s a more successful hybrid (with bells!) this year, I’d love to hear it.

“Chasing Dreams” is one of those great, fleeting moments that seems to arrive as if from nowhere. Let’s hope there’s a lot more where this comes from, because as he sings on the title track: “Looks like everything’s falling into place.”

I’m nodding my head vigorously in agreement. (9/10)
